“Even in its darkest passages, the heart is unconquerable. It is important that the body survives, but it is more meaningful that the human spirit prevails.”

Goodreads summary:
This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it."

Review:
This novel was a real page-turner for me. Not necessarily because of the writing style of the author, but because of the drama it contains. So many harsh things happened in this book that one can be sure life can get worse. I read this book in Dutch when I was fifteen years old, but wanted to read it again in English. It affected me as much now as it did back then.

I read several reviews of this book stating that the actions described in this book didn’t take place in real life, that Dave Pelzer exaggerated things that happened to him. To be honest, some bits within this book did feel a bit made up. These reviews made me uncomfortable because I don’t like it when writers lie about actions being real.

Don’t expect a beautifully written novel, however it is undeniably an eye-opening one. (Even if said events in this book didn’t take place in real life.)

I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading intense true stories filled with drama.
