Book Review: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

“Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.” - Jane Austen

 Title: Pride and Prejudice
Author: Jane Austen
First Published: 1813
Language: English
Pages: 443

Goodreads Summary:
Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr. Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr. Darcy, have moved into their neighborhood. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." So begins the novel, that features splendidly civilized sparring between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series of eighteenth-century drawing-room intrigues.

Review:
I really didn’t expect to adore this novel as much as I do. I am quite affected by this story to say the least. It gives me this rather rare feeling which I cannot exactly put into words. It kind of fills my heart with the most enchanting type of affection, if that makes any sense.

Not once have I stopped and thought about what I was holding in my hands. To think that this marvellous piece of art has been written centuries ago is quite overwhelming to be honest. As an English and history student I can in all honesty say that Pride and Prejudice is my new favourite fictional novel.

This book has overthrown Outlander of its 1st place for me, which I never thought could happen. I don’t exactly know the reason, but it is quite difficult for me to express my emotions when it comes to this novel. All I can say is that I’m missing Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy already immensely. Jane Austen sure did know how to suck her readers into her story. I cannot say it enough; this novel was splendid!

Jane Austen only wrote about the world she knew which is why it was written in such a realistic way. I honestly can’t believe that it took me so long to pick up one of her books. I plan on reading one Austen book every month.

I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading classics and romance.

  1. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite novel as well, I just love Jane Austen's wit and clever use of a pen. I hope you enjoy her other novels just as much. Nice review.
